We've sailed from the Arctic Circle (north of Iceland) to 55° South latitude (Beagle Channel, separating Chile and Argentina near the tip of South America), through the Panama and Suez canals and around the Cape of Good Hope, crossed the equator and international date line, seen the northern lights, Magellanic Clouds, Southern Cross when it's overhead, all 21 first-magnitude stars in one night, Perseids disappearing behind the silhouette of the Rock of Gibraltar, Geminid fireballs over the tropical Atlantic and thousands of Leonid meteors above the South China Sea while in our shirtsleeves, Comets Holmes and Q4 (NEAT) with the naked eye, total solar eclipses, transit of Venus, sun dogs and haloes, zodiacal light and skyglow in a dark sky during the new moon more than two thousand miles from the nearest city.
